FRANCE AND THE GK VILLAGES
Over the years, hundreds of French volunteers have traveled to Philippines to participate in the development of Gawad Kalinga villages or the social enterprises in the GK Enchanted Farm. Today, there are at least fifteen GK villages which were entirely or partially built by French volunteers. What does this mean for France and Gawad Kalinga?
The Lyonnais support the NGO Gawad Kalinga in eradicating poverty in the Philippines by financing the construction of 45 houses in Old Sagay, Punta Buntod, Panay, Capiz, Negros Occidental, in the Visayas group of islands. Distributed across a site of 3500m2, of which the local government has granted legal rights, these 40 residences will form part of one of the biggest villages bringing together 120 houses. The fundraising phase was from December 2014 to December 2015, and the construction phase will commence from February to June 2016.
The partnership between Gawad Kalinga and ESSEC signed in 2014 brought forth a long term project with a plan to send a dozen student volunteers every year. This program aims to support the actions being carried out on field in one of the disaster stricken areas devastated by typhoon Yolanda in 2013. The partnership also provides for the creation of an innovative program on leadership development.
Gawad Kalinga’s mission is to bring 5 million Filipino families out of poverty by 2024
